We have been awarded a grant from the American Physical Society to incorporate data science into the physics curriculum. As you are probably aware, a greater number of physicists are using data science as part of their research and our students/postdocs are also finding jobs in industry based on their skills in data science. While some institutions have the resources to develop full courses on data science in physics, for many, a strategy of incorporating data science into the existing curriculum will be more useful. We will award several fellowships to graduate students and postdocs to develop these curricular units. The compensation would be $5000 for the calendar year. We expect that the effort would take approximately 2 hours/week. The fellows would be expected to develop 2 curricular units, which would include lesson plans, exam questions, and notebooks. Fellows will be required to attend a workshop scheduled for the week of June 26, 2023, in the Washington, DC area.
The first year of our project has been successful, with a number of modules developed by our fellows! For this call, interested graduate students/postdocs are expected to develop one additional module, and advise faculty in deploying their module in a specific class. Additionally, Fellows will develop a second module and/or deploy an existing module. Graduate students/postdocs interested in deploying an existing module will partner with faculty/instructors for a course.
We would appreciate it if you can advertise this opportunity to the graduate students and postdocs in your department. They can apply here. Sadly, for students/postdocs studying/working within the US, we can only pay American citizens/green card holders. We can pay graduate students/postdocs who are studying/working outside of the US (including non-US citizens/green card holders). Applications received by November 5th, 2022 will receive full consideration.
We would also appreciate it if you could let faculty in your department know about our efforts in case they want to become involved!
Best,
Maria Longobardi, Wolfgang Losert, Alexis Knaub, William Ratcliff
